Recommended height and switch placement

Recommended height and switch placement

Intro

The correct placement of the switches is essential to ensure comfort, accessibility and an intuitive reading of the space. In interior architecture, your position must respect ergonomic principles, consider the layout of the space and maintain an aesthetic coherence with the other electrical elements.

General purpose switches (main lighting)

Recommended height: 105 cm from the floor (in the center of the mirror)

  • Ideal position for comfortable access with the arm in a natural position.
  • Used in most rooms: living rooms, bedrooms, corridors, offices, halls.
  • They must always be positioned next to the entrance door of the room, on the side of the door handle.
  • It is recommended to keep this height consistent throughout the house for visual uniformity.

Double or triple switches

Height: Stay at 105 cm

  • Used to control more than one light spot or lighting in different zones (ex: general light + wall lamp).
  • Provide sufficient wall space (width) to embed the modules side by side or in a vertical line.
  • They must be aligned with other jacks or commands visible on the same plane.

Bedside switches

Recommended height: 60 to 90 cm from the floor

  • They allow you to control the lighting without leaving the bed.
  • They must be positioned at 30 to 40 cm from the center of the bed, compatible with bedside tables.
  • In projects with custom-made headboards, it is possible to embed the switches directly into the structure or into the side niches.

Switches in bathrooms

Recommended height: 110 cm from the floor
Recommended location: outside the room or next to the door (outside)

  • For safety reasons, it is common practice to position the switch outside the bathroom.
  • When installed indoors, it must respect the minimum distance from wet areas (zone 3), with adequate protection (IP44 grade or higher).
  • It may include dual function: general lighting and mirror.

Switches in kitchens

Recommended height: 105 cm from the floor

  • Normally positioned next to the kitchen entrance.
  • In kitchens with separate work zones, it is possible to provide additional switches for lights under cabinets or specific zones.
  • They should be away from splash areas or close to faucets.

Switches in corridors or passage areas

  • Use switching switches (ladder type): one at the beginning and the other at the end of the route.
  • Standard height: 105 cm from the floor.
  • Essential to ensure convenience and safety at night.

Practical tips for planning switches

  • Always check the Door opening to set the correct side of the switch.
  • Avoid placing switches behind doors or fixed furniture.
  • Manter visual alignment with medium outlets or remote controls.
  • In accessible or adapted homes, consider accessibility standards (between 90 and 120 cm).
  • To use Construction marking to ensure correct position before carrying out the electrical installation.
